Richard Carnell died from wounds on 15th January, 1915 but as yet there is no information as to where and on what date he was wounded. The 1st East Lancashire battalion was part of 11 Brigade,  4th Division that had been on the Western Front since August, 1914 and had been involved in much of the fighting since then. He is buried in a cemetery many miles behind the German lines which suggests that he died while a prisoner of war
